What is D&D alignment?

In Dungeons & Dragons, alignment is a label for a character's general morals and habits. Good characters protect innocent life and will give something up to help others. Evil characters hurt, oppress, or kill others for their own gain. Someone neutral on that side has a problem with killing innocents, but will not make big sacrifices for strangers. Lawful characters tell the truth, keep their word, respect authority, and honor tradition. Chaotic characters follow their own conscience, dislike being told what to do, and keep a promise if they feel like it. Neutral on that side means no strong pull to obey or to rebel.

The two sides combine into nine alignments. Lawful Good is honor and compassion together. Neutral Good helps people and does not care much whether law is involved. Chaotic Good is kind but has little use for rules. Lawful Neutral follows a personal code or a system of order first. True Neutral does not feel strongly about good, evil, law, or chaos, or else tries to stay in the middle. Chaotic Neutral puts personal freedom first and does not make a mission of helping or harming anyone. Lawful Evil takes what it wants inside rules, ranks, or a code, without mercy. Neutral Evil looks out for itself and does whatever it can get away with. Chaotic Evil follows greed, hatred, or a wish to destroy, and does not keep a code.
