How core values drive character decisions

Values only matter when they cost you something. It is easy to say you value honesty, but the real test is whether you tell the truth when a lie would be easier. A character's actual values are not what they claim to believe. They are what they choose when backed into a corner. When someone is forced to choose between loyalty to a friend and their own safety, their decision defines who they really are. That friction shapes what happens in stories. Pitting a character's values against their fears, or letting their cognitive biases twist their ideals, creates moral dilemmas for the story.
