Phobias for character development

A phobia is an intense fear of a particular object or situation, out of proportion to the danger, and the person usually knows it is out of proportion. The phobias here cover animals such as spiders, snakes, dogs and insects; open nature and weather such as heights, storms, deep water and the dark; blood, needles, dentists and medical procedures; enclosed spaces, flying, bridges and driving; and a last group that fits none of the others, from balloons and mascots to the number 13. A character who flinches at a spider and one who cannot board a plane are afraid of very different things.

A phobia is narrower than a core fear. It attaches to a concrete trigger rather than an abstract threat, and the character tends to avoid that trigger at any cost. Where a core fear explains why a character acts as they do, a phobia explains the specific thing they will not go near. Phobias pair naturally with the defense mechanisms a character leans on, especially avoidance, and with their broader core fears. On the Enneagram, a type's core fear often shows up in daily life as a phobia-shaped avoidance.
