16 stress responses with behavioral descriptions and recovery patterns
When things go sideways, our conscious minds shut down and the nervous system takes over. That's when you see a character's true colors. The four classic survival responses are fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. Fight aggressively pushes back to regain control. Flight runs—sometimes literally, but often through workaholism or constant distraction. Freeze is total shutdown: a character who goes numb, dissociates, or simply can't act. Fawn is compliance: keeping the peace and people-pleasing to neutralize a threat. A character doesn't choose their stress response. It’s hardwired by their temperament and whatever kept them safe when they were young. If childhood taught them that speaking up leads to pain, they'll fawn or freeze; if they learned passivity is dangerous, they'll default to fight. Throwing your character into crisis reveals who they really are under the hood. Their response is tightly bound to their attachment style and the unconscious defense mechanisms they use to keep from falling apart.
