Character flaws vs quirks

A quirk adds flavor; a flaw ruins lives. That is the easiest way to separate the two. A quirk is harmless, like tapping a pen, collecting weird trivia, or showing up early. A flaw has real, destructive consequences: rigidity prevents adaptation, impulsiveness leads to decisions that cannot be undone, and manipulation erodes trust. The best characters have flaws that share a root with their greatest strengths. Perfectionism can drive someone to produce excellent work, while simultaneously destroying their ability to collaborate. Charm can build genuine connections, but it can also serve as a tool for manipulation. A flaw isn't the opposite of a strength; it's just a strength running wild without self-awareness. Flaws often connect to deeper core values taken to an extreme and can be amplified by cognitive biases that blind a character to their own behavior.
